  • Mother / father - doctor
  • Mother / father - receptionist

This can be changed to other characters.

Narrator: Today in a busy everyday health care service, we have moved from the old style of health care into becoming more and more aware of targets that need to be meet, audits that need to be done, and policies that need to be followed.

We regularly read in the newspapers of problems in the health service such as long term waiting lists and more recently of infections such as MRSA.

In the midst of all of this doom and gloom, the health service keeps going, with people who are dedicated to the welfare of those who are in their care.

Within this service there are Christians who are working in offices and wards in our hospitals, along with those who are working in the community. Sometimes these people who go to work playing a small part in the giant called the Health Service can get lost. These people see themselves as just everyday people doing a job, but they are making a real difference, because of the way they do their jobs.

Parent of a child in children's ward

Mother: It was such a hard time for us when or daughter went into hospital, one day she was a healthy six year old, the next laying in a bed with tubes going in and coming out of her. Test after test, doctor after doctor. After a while I lost all thought of time, days just became one long bad dream. Everyone was very supportive, keeping me informed of what was happening. The only thing that gave any relief was every morning when the cleaner/nurse came into the ward.

Annie: "Well how is she this morning, you know I think she is looking a whole lot better?"

Mother: Do you think so, the doctors say that she should make a good recovery.

Annie: Well they should know what they are taking about, after all they are the doctors. And what about you, how are you this morning"

Mother: I am not so bad, at least last night I got some sleep.

Can I ask you a question? I hope you don't think me rude. How can you be so happy all the time, does it not get you down day after day working with these sick children?

Annie: No not at all, you see I am a Christian, I love God and I know he loves me, and I know he loves your little girl. You see I pray for all these children as I am cleaning/working around their beds and I know God hears my prayers. Suppose I am a bit like 007, or some kind of undercover agent.

[ Annie moves away, with brush in hand / or if nurse file.]

Annie: When you see me cleaning/working around your daughter's bed, remember I will be praying for her."

Mother: Here was this woman working away ever day, cleaning wards encouraging parents and staff with her cheerful life. Her words brought hope in the midst of great darkness. In the weeks that followed, Annie sang as she cleaned and brought her own joy to the ward as she did her job. As I watched my daughter start to improve and then after some six weeks leave the hospital, I often thought of Annie and her prayers.

Narrator: This and many other stories are told of healthcare workers who have a heart after God, healthcare workers who make a difference.

These people may never be recognized for their kind words and their outstanding care through a medal or some great award. But they are God's Heroes in our Health Service.

Just like Annie made a difference, there are thousands of Christians in our health care system, working with people who are worried, afraid, and uncertain.

Lets pray for the staff in the health care system , the doctors and nurses, therapists, social workers, office workers, ambulance drivers, kitchen staff and cleaners.

Prayer:

Lord we thank you for the staff with our healthcare system and the day to day care that they give. We ask that you will empower the Christian staff as they do their day to day job. We thank you that people who make a difference can still be found in our world.

And we give thanks for these heroes. Etc…
