Prayer pointers 2006

Remember women just discovering they are pregnant who feel shocked, frightened and alone – particularly teenagers.  Pray they will find a responsible caring person who will support and give them hope.

Heavenly Father, please strengthen and encourage all social care staff: in children’s homes, as foster carers, advisors, therapists and in other professional capacities.  Help them to demonstrate Your compassion to children who cannot live with their own families at this time.  Amen.

Remember those who look after children who require constant care, asking God to strengthen parents facing an uncertain future.  Pray for His provision of strength, patience and wisdom to cope with crisis and ongoing pressure.

Pray about the alarming rise of sexually transmitted infections; that wise and effective health advice will be promoted in schools through Christian educators, counsellors and resources.

Pray for children in parts of the developing world abandoned and orphaned because of war, disease and other tragedies.  Give thanks for the hundreds of Christian agencies, churches and individuals providing food, shelter, education and healthcare – motivated by the love of Jesus.

The National Health Service employs over one million people making it the single largest employer in Europe.

Remember the thousands of Christians employed by the NHS; asking God to minister His healing and wholeness through them.  Pray that they will have opportunities to meet others for prayer and encouragement in the workplace and be supported by their churches.

Heavenly Father please give carers the strength and patience they need each day in their labour of love looking after a family member, friend or neighbour.  In Jesus name.  Amen.

Lord we lift to you anyone who is mourning the death of the person they cared for.  Please bestow Your comfort in their empty home and grieving heart, and send those who will be sensitive and wise in their support at this time.  Amen.

Remember those caring for people suffering from Alzheimer’s and other conditions effecting memory, personality and behaviour.  Pray they will receive the advice, practical support and respite they need to help them carry on.

There are 5.7 million carers in Britain.  Nine out of ten of them look after someone related to them.  60% care for a person with a physical disability.

Lord our Provider; we lift to you people who are anxious about their health; experiencing pain and weakness or caring for loved ones who are unwell.  Draw near to them by Your Spirit and touch them through the compassion and skills of those caring for them.  Amen.

“He has shown you, O man what is good.  And what does the Lord require of you?  To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”  Micah 6:8 (NIV)

Creator God, thank you for giving us life and making us ‘in your image’.  Please empower Christians and others working in healthcare seeking to uphold the dignity of human life.  Protect the most vulnerable; bring comfort, hope and the knowledge of your love.  Amen

Pray for people in need of special medical and personal care who feel they have little dignity and control over their lives.  Remember those suffering from depressions and hopelessness and ask God to remind them of their unique value to Him.

In a Daily telegraph survey (29.08.05) 58% of respondents said abortion should not be carried out after the 20th week of pregnancy.  87% agreed with the legalisation of assisted suicide – that terminally ill people ‘should have the right to decide when they want to die and to ask for medical assistance to help them’.

Remember the 38 million living with HIV?AIDS throughout the world, and the devastating effects of at least 20 million deaths, with 5 million new cases each year.  Pray that the many Christian organisations involved will be strengthened and supported.

He is a God who always comforts and helps people.  He helps us every time we have trouble.  Then we are able to be strong and to help other people every time they have trouble.  We can do this with the same comfort God gives us.’  2 Corinthians 1:3,4 (worldwide English version)

Lord of all compassion, thank you for the almost six million people in the UK who care for a family member, friend or neighbour.  Please fill them with fresh energy to keep going and send help when life is particularly stressful.  For Christ’s sake, Amen,

Remember those carers who, while saving £57 billion a year, may face hardship and isolation with little recognition or status.  Pray that those who need it will be able to claim disability benefits and qualify for a carer’s allowance.

Pray for more carers to receive much needed time off, emotional support, professional and practical help and peace of mind about the quality of services of those they look after.  Ask God to grant wisdom and success to government bodies and those seeking to achieve this.

Grateful thanks is given to CARE for these prayer pointers.
