Prayer pointers 2007

We would like to thank CARE for permission to use the following prayer information.  Further resources for prayer can be obtained from their web site www.care.org.uk/prayer

Lord we pray that Christians who work in the caring professions in local communities, schools and hospitals will be channels of Your healing and wholeness to patients, colleagues and others they meet.  That they will increasingly demonstrate their love of Christ through their relationships with fellow staff and patients, living out the Holy Spirit’s fruit of love, joy, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.  May they have many opportunities to meet others for prayer and encouragement in the workplace and receive support from members of their church, for Jesus sake, Amen.

Pray about the increasing threats of violent behaviour directed at staff working as paramedics, in Accident & Emergency departments, in local GP surgeries and other settings.  Pray for God’s special protection and courage, especially for staff dealing with patients affected by alcohol and drugs and those with severe mental problems.

Remember those working within the health service who have come from overseas especially from the developing world.  Pray that they will learn much and gain valuable experience as they care for others in need and that many will be inspired to return to their countries in the future to practice and share their skills and expertise.

Ethics

Lord please guide those considering how to ensure legislation keeps pace with rapidly developing technologies and help them understand what safeguards are needed top prevent harm and misuse of new discoveries and inventions.  May any unethical plans and activities be discovered and banned.  Amen

Almighty God, we pray for those who are now finalising the wording of the Government’s Human Embryo and Tissues Bill.  Help them to recognise that it is in the best interests of every child to have a father, so this should come before people’s ‘reproduction rights’ and also restrain the practice of creating human/animal hybrids for stem cell research purposes.

Continue to intercede that the cloning of human beings will be outlawed throughout the world and the use of human embryos will be discredited.  Pray for ongoing success in adult stem cell research which will lead to the finding of cures for serious health problems.

Pray for scientists, medical professionals and regulators involved in research into nanotechnology; a complicated subject with huge potential for good and harm.  Pray that proper provision will be made to consider its far-reaching ethical, legal and social implications.  (nanotechnology; manipulating matter on the tiny scale of atoms and molecules)

Pray for staff in secondary schools and further education institutions who teach subjects that  involve medical ethics.  Ask God especially to help Christians who do not feel adequately trained in this to find text books and resources that deal with theses difficult issues from a Biblical perspective.

Pray for an increasing number of Christians to work with the Medical Research Council and the many research and clinical ethics committees attached to NHS Trusts and other bodies.  Ask God to give them special wisdom and biblically based insight into difficult situations so they can contribute effectively to debates on important issues.

Intercede for Christian medical and science students learning about medical and bio-ethics.  Pray for them to understand how to apply their beliefs to the situations they will encounter during their training and future employment.  Pray for them to become exceptional academic and clinic experts in their field, able to influence the future in ways that fulfil God’s purposes.

Father please grant grace and wisdom to medical, nursing and allied health professionals, chaplains and carers on the front line of medical ethics, treating and caring for seriously ill patients suffering from severe pain and distress.  Help them as they make difficult decisions always to uphold the value and dignity of human life.  Amen.

Euthanasia

Thank God for the UK Hospice Movement’s vision to care for people in the closing stages of their lives.  Pray for a hospice known to you; that God will bless those who work there and in patient’s homes, and bestow His peace and presence upon all who come to be admitted, to work or to visit.  Pray for the provision of sufficient finances.

Pray also that those in leadership in the hospice movement will courageously oppose any attempt to legalise euthanasia in this country.

Thank God for the tens of thousands of carers who look after terminally ill, frail and elderly family members at home.  Ask Him to grant them the strength, patience, resources and hope that they need as they demonstrate loving care to people nearing the end of their life.

Pray for people who have been unconscious and seriously ill for a long time; that their lives will not be artificially cut short through any form of euthanasia, but that their right to life and dignity will be respected to the end.  Ask God to give wisdom to the doctors, nurses and others as they work with these patients and their families.

Vulnerable People

Pray today for people in great pain and discomfort, suffering from an illness or serious disability.  Ask God to give them the courage and grace not to despair but to keep going and that He may grant them unexpected blessings of Joy, peace and love at the hands of family friends and carers.

Intercede for babies and children who have been diagnosed with serious medical conditions and ask God to give families the strength and courage they need.  Pray for the professionals who care for them to provide the best medical and nursing support.

Please pray for the 1.4 million pensioners in the UK who live on £5,000 or less and others who are vulnerable because of poor physical and mental health, loneliness or mistreatment.  Pray that local Churches will have a growing vision to reach out to such people with spiritual comfort, friendship and practical help.

Abortion

Approximately 46 million abortions take place globally every year – 78% of them in the developing world and the rest in developed countries.  In 2006 186,400 babies were aborted in England and Wales.

Intercede that women who are considering abortion may realize the implications of their unborn babies, their own physical and emotional health and their families. Ask God to encourage and equip all who are involved in Christian pregnancy crisis centers, offering advice and practical support.

Lord we bring to you every woman who is experiencing physical and emotional pain following an abortion today, and also men who are grieving for their lost babies.  Please lead them to the CARE confidential web site where they can read about others experience and find free personal counseling help. Amen (www.careconfidedntial.com)

As we remember the millions of aborted lives since the 1967 Act, pray for those involved in pro-choice campaigns wanting to make abortion more easily available. Pray that the growing number of GPs who refuse to sign referral forms will be strengthened in their resolve and that this will encourage many other people top speak out to protect unborn children and their mothers.

Sexual Issues

The UK has the highest rate of teenage pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases in Europe.  In 2005 51,509 young women under 18 became pregnant.  Just over half of them gave birth but most under 16 years olds had abortions.  110,000 case of chlamydia were diagnosed in 2005.

Pray about the mounting pressure on schools to teach young children about heterosexual activity, homosexual relationships, contraception and other related subjects.  Pray that parents and others who are concerned will increasingly speak up to request an appropriate promotion of marriage and reaching about the value of sexual abstinence.

Mental  Health

Lord thank you for those who are helping people with mental health problems; ranging from mild depression to severe psychotic conditions.  Please enable them to identify the most appropriate treatments and grant them wisdom about how patients can live safely and with peace of mind.  Amen

Up to three-quarters of men in prison suffer from two or more mental disorders.  The suicide rater for men in prison is five times that of men in the community. Nearly two thirds of women in prison have a drug problem.  (Penal reform Trust)

Father we lift to you the thousands of UK prisoners with serious mental disorders and those responsible for their care.  Please help prison officers and others in their work which is inadequately resourced and often ignored by those outside.  Grant Chaplains and other Christian staff and volunteers special grace, wisdom and compassion as they deal with mentally ill prisoners.   Amen

Pray for children who have been diagnosed with learning difficulties – and also autism or Asperger’s Syndrome, which effect their ability to relate and interact normally with their environment.  Ask God to send parents the help they need to understand, accommodate and help their children’s problems.

International

Intercede for the two million people displaced across Darfur and Chad.  Pray for the 13 major agencies working together with the Disasters Emergency Committee will succeed in streamlining aid and bringing relief to those lacking food, clean water, medical care, shelter and security.

Intercede for the millions of people who are already at risk because they lack access to clean water and sanitation.  Pray that sufficient funding and cooperation will be available to those working to help them and for long term solutions to be found to future problems of increasing water shortages across the developing world.

The United Nations projects that two-thirds of the world’s population will live in areas that face water scarcity by 2025.

Remember orphans, street children and others throughout the developing world in dangerous situations and without basic healthcare, nutrition, education and love.  Give thanks for every initiative that cares for them and pray that Governments, churches and others will continue to support them.

Intercede for the millions of women in the developing world and elsewhere who undergo abortions almost routinely, often totally against their will.  Ask God to comfort them in their distress and cause those in authority who sanction this tragedy to reconsider their position and work to reduce the number of aborted children.
