Sermon Outline - heroes in healthcare

Pause for thought

Everyday Christian living is not for the fainthearted - HEROES REQUIRED

Each life is precious. Everyone we meet - friends, family, neighbours, colleagues, patients, Jesus died for each one.

There is nothing ordinary about reaching them with the Good News of the Gospel.  For many if not all of us, it will take heroic effort on our part to enable us to demonstrate God's love to them.  Reaching out to the lost is not for the faint hearted.  Standing up for what is right and refusing to compromise is not for those who lack courage.

To truly live as Christ commands requires:

  • Putting others first when we least feel like it;
  • Taking time to listen to someone when we have plenty of worries and grief of our own;
  • Providing comfort and showing compassion towards others when we also need someone to come along side us;
  • Giving to help meet the needs of others when we have needs of our own;
  • Having passion enough to be willing to risk everything to stand up for what we believe is right.

Those who are faithful in the little things every day are indeed HEROES.  If in today's world we want to be salt and light, if we want our light to shine in the gathering darkness, we will indeed need to be heroic. The good news is that we don't have to do it on our own. God has promised to be with us every step of the way and to be our enabler in all that we do.

God's Heroes

Very few of us think of ourselves as heroes, we don't even consider what we do each day as anything out of the ordinary.

BUT what does God think?

After all it is His opinion that really matters - RIGHT?

The Bible is filled with real life stories of people just like us.

People who didn't think much of themselves e.g. Gideon, Moses, Jeremiah

Ordinary men and women who God took in the middle of doing their everyday tasks and made their lives extraordinary e.g. Abraham, David, Elisha and the twelve disciples.

God takes those who have made mistakes, even got things very badly wrong and turned their lives completely around e.g. Jacob, Paul, Zacchaeus.

God can turn what seems like disaster into triumph e.g. Joseph, Moses

God can use all of us despite our circumstances:

  • Hannah had family problems
  • Elijah suffered from depression
  • Thomas was full of doubts
  • Peter denied Jesus
  • Mary Magdalen had a dubious past

This is a roll call of God's heroes and you can be one too.
