Sermon Outline - heroes in healthcare

Extraordinary Service by Ordinary People.

2 Chron 34:20 – 28

Then the king commanded Hilkiah, saying….”Go, inquire of the Lord for me…concerning the words of the book which has been found”

So Hilkiah and those whom the king had told went to Huldah the wife of Shalum, keeper of the wardrobe…and they spoke to her regarding this. And she said to them, “Thus says the Lord God of Israel…..”   v28 – and they brought back word to the king.

Consider the life of Huldah, wife of the king’s tailor. She was not a person of importance or high office, yet, when the king and his leaders needed to enquire of the Lord urgently, to whom did they immediately go? – to Huldah.

Why was she held in such high regard that the High Priest of Israel himself sought her counsel above all else?

In the years that she and her husband had lived and worked in Jerusalem, her life and walk before men and before God must have been one of absolute integrity. Day in and day out she had proved herself to be utterly reliable and completely trustworthy in all matters.

She was known to be a person who spent time with God, speaking to Him and listening. She would know His mind. She was uncompromised by all that the world has to offer and could be relied upon to ‘tell it like it is’.

What an incredible woman! In simply living a Godly life, she commanded the respect of the highest religious and civic leaders in the land and, at this pivotal moment in the history of Israel, God chose her to speak clearly into their situation.

Who are God’s heroes in the field of healthcare today?

  • They are those who are known for their Godly lives. Not necessarily of high position, but having Godly wisdom and influence amongst their colleagues and patients.
  • They are people you can turn to for help – they are reliable.
  • They are people who regularly spend time with God and know what He is saying.
  • They are people who will tell you the truth, not what they think you want to hear or what society expects them to say.
  • Their walk, before God and before men, is open and honest – they ‘tell it like it is’.
  • They are people of integrity.

Please God, raise up more heroes in healthcare today that will walk as Huldah walked and be powerful influences for good in our society.  Amen.
